Lady of Firsts!

24th July marks the 121st birth anniversary of Amelia Mary Earhart, a mystery yet to be solved. Let us all go back in time and glance through her achievements and contributions to this society. She is the lady of firsts; the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean and the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to the United States mainland.

In 1922, Earhart became the first woman to fly above 14,000 ft and in 1932 she flew across the Atlantic Ocean, both being solo flights. She was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, a military honour awarded for heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight for her solo venture across the Atlantic Ocean.

She is also the first woman to fly solo across the US. Earhart became the first president of the organization ‘the Ninety-Nines’. It’s a worldwide association that gives recognition to women pilots across 44 countries and exists still now.

On her second attempt to become the first pilot to circumnavigate the earth, she and her navigator Fred Noonan disappeared above the Howland coast. They simply vanished. Her disappearance remains a mystery till date. We hope she found peace.
