Kolkata Police introduces Damini for the underprivileged

Kolkata Police started 2nd Venue of ‘Damini’ (an initiative of community policing wing, Kolkata Police) for girl child empowerment through football coaching on Saturday 5th May. West Bengal Legislative Assembly’s MLA, Mala Saha inaugurated the project ‘Damini’ by kicking a football on the office ground of DC, North Division of Kolkata Police.

Girl children from the age of 10 years to 16 years, who face difficulties in their daily life, will be given the proper mental, physical, and conscience development by performing different activities. Project “Damini” is already active in Mumbai, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi for women empowerment and safety. Under the project ‘Nabadisha’, these children had already been receiving educational and healthcare assistance since 1997. Presently, Kolkata Police has joined hands with Nabadisha, to identify these girls and enrol them in football coaching to improve their confidence, social awareness and at the same time, to identify their football talents. In a word, the project aims at empowering the underprivileged girls of Kolkata who are vulnerable to social evils. The 1st venue of Damini was inaugurated on May 2nd at Park Circus Maidan in which more than 60 girls getting assistance under Nabadisha project were selected for football coaching.

Girls belonging to the lesser privileged section of the society often become prey to various social evils like child marriage, human trafficking, domestic violence, rape and many other forms of offences.  Well-known NGO ‘Sreeja’ is assisting the Kolkata Police to execute the project in a successful manner.
