Kolkata offers the first transwoman lawyer of India

Transgenderism has always been the backward and the ignored concept in the minds of the people. In fact, because of their orientation they are often not even considered humans by many in the society. With such a scenario all around, Megh Sayantan Ghosh makes it outstanding by being the first transwoman in India to become a lawyer. She is not just the first transwoman to become a lawyer in India but she has created history for not just the city but India! She has won the case she was fighting as said by the District Judge of the Alipur Judge Court.

The journey of transformation as assumed was not at all a cake walk for her. She went through a lot of turmoil, tortures and abusive languages just because she was a woman at heart and a man by appearance. She has been tormented and taunted even by her colleagues at work place. The society denied her but she stood strong. Her faith on herself did not shake her even for once.

Graduating in 2011 from Calcutta University Sayantan enrolled herself at the Bar Council of Kolkata. Her work place made her feel the same way the rest of the world did. They taunted her for the way she talked, for the way she walked. People tried their utmost level best to dull her high spirit. She failed to make people understand that that she was a woman inside. Sayantan had not undergone the gender change surgery.

Sayantan’s father and Dr. Manobi Bandhopadhyay, who is also a transwoman was her greatest support. Her victory and success is not just hers but it is rather a victory to the community as a whole.

Jiyo Woman salutes such Woman who believe in what they are.
