Iranian women embracing the tradition ‘on the field’

Women and girls have been attached to football for a long time. Since then the number has been steadily climbing, making their country proud. But what about the ‘conservative’ world?

Normal service has resumed at Iranian football grounds. Things were different in Iran during 1979 and the late Ayatollah Khomeini’s Islamic revolution. They came a long way since they made their maiden appearance in the International arena about 14 years ago.

Breaking all the shackles and keeping their faith intact, the Iranian Sheroes is the only team across the globe to put on a headscarf, known as ‘hijab’ at the field. These players donned in white scarves, country jersey, knee-length long shorts emblazoned with the message “Yes, we can break stereotype”. Currently, the Iranian women’s national football team are in the Temple City to participate in the four-nation Women’s Gold Cup. Nepal, Myanmar and hosts India are the other three teams. Well, donning the hijab with athletic attire is uncomfortable. But Iranian head coach Maryam Azmoon has a different perspective. She feels it is not a restriction at all. Keeping the religion belief intact, the girls are playing their heart out. They won the AFC Futsal Championship in 2015 and 2018. Bring laurels for the country and excelling themselves for good.

It takes a lot of zeal and stubbornness to play the game despite such religious obligations. Especially when regions and culture pulling girls to participate in the extraordinary game and change the light.
