Indu Malhotra; the seventh woman judge of the Supreme Court

Senior lawyer Indu Malhotra became the first woman lawyer to be directly appointed as the Supreme Court judge. She administered the oath by Chief Justice Dipak Mishra on Friday. Her name was one among the two recommendations by the Collegium to be promoted to the Supreme Court.

Indu Malhotra has been an eminent senior advocate and one the members of the Vishakha Committee to resolve matters on sexual harassment cases at workplaces. The law ministry recommended Ms. Malhotra’s name for the top court holding back the name of Uttarakhand Chief Justice KM Joseph for elevation.

Justice Fatima Beevi was the first woman judge to be appointed at the top court. She was appointed in the year 1989; that is 39 years after the Supreme Court was set up (1950).
