Freedom on three-wheel at Dehradun

Isn’t it heartwarming to see young girls taking up jobs that are considered unconventional for them by society? Things are changing for good. If you land in Dehradun, you might see a female driver at the e-rickshaw stand.

Meet Gulista Ansari. She is 26 years old and has become Dehradun’s first female e-rickshaw driver. She took up the profession a fortnight ago after buying an e-rickshaw for herself on December 21. She was working for a company which manufactured medicines. But the hectic work, immense pressure at the workplace and meagre income forced her to quit the job and start up her new occupation. She took a bank loan of Rs 1,57,000 to buy a battery-operated rickshaw.

It has already created quite a buzz in the conservative neighbourhood of Shiv Mandir Gali.

When asked how much does she earn per day? Gulista smiled and said, 'I now earn up to Rs 600 per day, plying the rickshaw from 8 am to 8 pm’. The best part is, her 68 years old mother is proud of her daughter’s decision. However, marriage is not on the card for Gulista who has resolved to shoulder the responsibility of the household. Woman passengers in the city of Dehra say that it’s a ‘refreshing change’ to see a female driver.
