First female president of CAB

For the first time a woman, Angelina Mantosh Jasnani became the president of the Catholic Association of Bengal or CAB on Sunday. She got elected to the position along with another woman member, Ofelia Kaiser, who was chosen as a secretary of India’s oldest laity organization. The Laity organization was established in 1911. This is the first time in 107-years that a woman’s achievement was recognized and was considered enough to take responsibility of CAB.

The committee has a total of 40 members, two members elected from each of the 20 Roman Catholic churches across the state of West Bengal. These 40 members then elect the president of the association.

The Roman Catholic Metropolitan Archdiocese of Calcutta was constructed in 1834 by Pope Gregory XVI and was originally known as ‘Apostolic Vicariate of Bengal'. It covers the districts of Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North 24-Parganas, East Midnapur, West Midnapur and Bankura.
