First Female Flight Engineer

The word ‘impossible’ if dismembered spells ‘I am possible’ and if we fix our mind on one thing, then there is nothing in the universe to stop us. Similarly, women over the years have proved that nothing is unattainable. Flight Lieutenant Hina Jaiswal became the first female flight engineer of the Indian Air Force. She was a part of the IAF’s 2015-engineering branch and completed her course at the Air Force Station in Yelahanka.

Hina is from Chandigarh and completed her BE from Punjab University. She always dreamt of donning the soldier’s uniform and take to the skies. Today her dreams have finally come true.

In India, women were not allowed for the post of flight engineer, but it was flung open for women officers in 2018. Flight engineers monitor and operate complex aircraft systems and are a member of an aircraft’s flight crew. It requires specialized skill sets.

The Defense Ministry has issued a press release that says that Hina will be posted to a helicopter squadron. She will be monitoring and operating IAF’s complex aircraft in various conditions which include Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Siachen Glacier.
