Our society has become very progressive these days, we are trying to create a comfortable space for everyone including the transgenders. But there are still some flaws that need to be mended like clothing: there is clothing for men, women, and kids but no particular section for the trans. There are no options or clothes created to suit their body structure which leaves them with limited option of only sarees.
Seeing that a group of five transwomen and a transman in Kolkata decided to step in. They are training at a sewing machine dealer’s showroom to make clothes that will help them dress the way they desire.
They are also planning to hold a fashion show, titled ‘Karigaari’, to showcase their creativity and delve into the retail industry. This idea is the brainchild of a board member of the West Bengal Transgender Board. The supervisor of the sewing machine company; who have been backing them up is teaching them to sew clothes like a professional. Clothes they are making includes, blouses, gowns, shararas, flared jeans for transwomen and button-up shirts, trousers with broader hips, light-coloured shirts for transmen.
