After ‘Nari Shakti’ became the Hindi word of the year in the Oxford dictionary. We got a glance of it in Kolkata where a group of women priests conducted a wedding and this has taken the internet by storm. Not only that in that same wedding the father of the bride of the refused to perform the ‘Kanyadaan’, a Hindu wedding ritual; where the father gives away the bride. The father of the bride said that his daughter is nobody’s property, and they also made sure that the mother’s name is taken before the father’s name.
The head priestess, Nandini Bhowmick is a professor of Sanskrit and a drama enthusiast as well. the internet has praised the move as a very progressive one. Deep down we all criticize this patriarchal society but some have the courage to stand up to it and change it. Society needs more people like this in our society and this is indeed a very progressive and empowering thing to do.
