Age is not a hurdle if the mission is to bring a change

The government of India’s dream to stop people from defecating in the open will surely end because many people are taking the initiative to put an end to this odd practice. People of Udhampur, in Jammu and Kashmir, were defecating in the open. Soon the residents of the village realized defecating in the open should be stopped, when several awareness programmes were held in the village. These awareness programmes had a huge impact on an 87-year-old woman named Rakki. Highly convinced by the bad health effects of defecating in the open, she without letting her old age become a hurdle took the initiative to build toilets in her village.

According to the ANI news agency, she said, “I want everyone to use the toilet as defecating in open gives birth to all sorts of diseases. I am poor and do not have money to build a toilet, hence decided to build the toilet with my own hands without any constructed tool or help. My son made the mud for my toilet after which I levelled the bricks and did the masonry work”.

Under the campaign of Clean India mission and Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, it is a mission to achieve to provide toilets to more than 60 million homes by the year-end of 2019. Hence, this woman, without any support and help pledges to change the outlook and the mindset of the people.
