A Day to Commemorate Women Uprising

On Monday, 12th March the district of Darjeeling in the state of West Bengal observed the 60th Tibetan Women’s National Uprising Day along with the world. It is observed to mark the beginning of the Lhasa Uprising which dates back to 1959.

In 1959, when Tibet was going through a turmoil on whether it will be able to survive as an independent nation or not, the Tibetan woman led a non-violent movement. The women showed great courage and devotion to Tibet. Many lost their lives in the protest and on Tuesday people gathered at the Darjeeling Chowrasta to offer prayers and pay tribute to the men and women who sacrificed their lives for Tibet. They also organized a peace rally on that day.

The president of the Tibetan Women’s Association Choden stated that this is the 60th year of the Tibetan Women’s National Uprising Day when back in 1959 marked the first active, women-led non-violent protest against Chinese occupation of Tibet that led to the foundation for peaceful resistance. The women of Tibet have stood against the most repressive regime with courage and determination and continue to do so.
